Film View:

Daniels is a savvy and creative offensive player who lacks elite burst and athleticism, but who uses good countermoves, anticipation, and a lethal runner to be an effective offensive weapon.  Daniels often ran the Pick and Roll or took a Dribble Hand Off (DHO) to gain an advantage…

Best Stats:

2.5 steals, 2.3 offensive rebounds, and 0.9 blocks per 40 – while Daniels may not be an elite athlete, he clearly has the anticipation and applied athleticism to be an impact NBA player; 5.8 assists per 40 – bonus credit here, as this is extremely high for an 18 year old SG/SF in the G-League.

Worst Stats:

27% three point percentage, 53% free throw percentage – while Daniels did end the year hitting 45% of his threes and flashing some hope he was improving, the shooting numbers are a red flag that would really hamper his career if he cannot improve them

To be a star or to hit their ceiling:

That Daniels can shoot and follow a Lonzo Ball-like trajectory.  And that his defensive abilities and passing carry over to the NBA.  If he can shoot, defend, and pass – he’s going to be at least an elite role player, if not another borderline all star pushing for his 1-2 appearances off the bench.

Verdict:

I don’t want to over-react to a sample size of one, but the success of last year’s class should help us solidify that the G-League is a good training stop and that some of the concerns we have with 18 year olds going against grown men and shooting from the NBA three point line should at least be taken with a grain of salt.  While Daniels will have the normal ups and downs you’d expect from a rookie, I think he’s too smart and skilled to not smooth out his shot to an acceptable degree.  If he does, he’s really the prototypical modern wing with the length, strength, feel, and diversified two-way skill set to be a championship caliber player.  Daniels may not quite have the ceiling of some of the higher tier prospects, but he’s another player who has lower level all star potential if everything breaks right and is still very likely to be an invaluable connector in more middling scenarios.
