Film View:

Ivey is a unique combo guard (with the potential to be a PG) who possesses elite, functional, athletic tools and a mix of legitimate, well developed skills and nascent skills that will inhibit his ability to hit his ceiling if he doesn’t develop them.  Ivey possesses elite speed, body control/bend,…

Physically Similar NCAA Prospects:

(Based on Height / Wingspan / Weight, not on Playing Style / Skill / Ceiling)

De’Aaron FoxBobby Jackson Ish Smith

Best Stats:

62% FG at the rim with 19.7% assisted – everyone in the arena knew what Ivey was going to try to do and no one could stop him

Worst Stats:

3.9 assists per 40, 1.2 A/T rate – Ivey isn’t the first PG with elite tools to need to work on his mid-range game, but for a sophomore with WNBA pedigree (his mom is a former WNBA player and current women’s NCAA coach) those are pretty poor passing numbers

To be a star or to hit their ceiling:

First, Ivey needs to develop a jumper.  And second he needs to improve his passing / creation for others.  I do think some of the later will come in an NBA offense and with big men who are better P&R partners (Eddy and Williams were pretty slow trailers and neither was a threat to pop, leaving to some clogged lanes), but if Ivey struggles to process and run an offense, it will be a big inhibitor.

Verdict:

Ivey wins this year’s Scottie Barnes / Isaac Okoro award for the player whose entire career arc may swing on their ability to develop a jumper.  However, while I tend to favor high feel / high skill prospects over run and jump athletes, I do like players who have an ability (mental, skill, or physical) that allows them to consistently create an advantage in the NBA and Ivey’s elite dribbling speed and functional athleticism give him a chance to be special.  And while he has areas he needs to improve upon, it’s not as if he is some unskilled athlete who can mostly dunk and drive in a straight line, so I think he has a reasonable chance to succeed.  Unfortunately, because of some of Ivey’s development areas, there is legitimate risk involved and Ivey could wind up worse than some of the players behind him and / or be a very unique style of player you have to craft the team to fit around (and who is not impactful enough to warrant that effort).
