Film View:

Keegan Murray is a versatile scorer who can post, drive, and shoot.  He has the ability to create and play either off the ball – either as a cutter/spacer or as the screener in the pick and roll.  Murray is already an elite catch and shoot player when he’s able…

Best Stats:

99th percentile total offense, 15.7 BPM, 37.8 Net Rating – By virtually any measure, he was one of the most efficient and dominant players last year, which to some degree should transfer to the NBA

Worst Stats:

1.9 assists per 40 is pretty low for an experienced player with as many touches as Murray had per game.  For a higher feel “role player” you’d hope he’d help create more for others as well.

To be a star or to hit their ceiling:

His shot and defense translate.  He also can be pushed around a bit, especially on defense, so he needs to get a bit more physical to reach his two-way potential.

Verdict:

Murray is exactly the type of high feel, high skill player who 10 years ago would have dropped outside the top 10 (shoot, two years ago, Tyrese Haliburton still dropped to 12).  I do think he’s more properly rated at #5, but I do think people are underrating his potential ceiling.  As Bryant West of The Kings Herald always points out, role player is not an insult, the best teams are packed full of role players.  But I do think Murray has lower level All Star potential if everything breaks right (picture a player who makes 1-2 All Star games off the bench, maybe once as an injury replacement like a Jrue Holiday). Murray is exactly the type of multi-positional, two-level defender teams covet defensively and he’s a good enough shooter/scorer offensively to create havoc even if he’s not a team’s primary ball handler. However, I do think the team that drafts him may need to prepare for an up-and-down year one despite his maturity.  A lot of SFs / PFs take a year or two to adapt to NBA strength and toughness.  Murray is not the most physical player with the strongest base.  He may not be able to guard players such as Marcus Morris, Jaren Jackson Jr. or Jaxon Hayes next year.  We saw similar players such as Tobias Harris, Harrison Barnes, and others in this mold need a couple of years to adapt and consistently guard up as well.
