They loved his impact stats, TS% (among the NCAA league leaders at 68.4%), and his combination of steals + blocks + oboards.

They did not like his age, A/T for his age, three point shooting, steals per foul, rebounds for his position, or his combination of points + assists per 40. There were also just a lot where he was fine, but it didn’t really do anything to help his score, especially given his age.

Verdict:

He blocks shots, boards, dunks, can serve at times as the screener in the P&R, and is not a statue on defense. He also isn’t terribly dynamic, but could serve as a situational player in the league.

Somewhere in the 35-45 range seems about right. Though it’s always possible a playoff team that wants a bit more defense and rim protection off the bench decides to pull the trigger a bit sooner. And frankly I wouldn’t be upset or argue with them.

But Kalkbrenner definitely violates the “Presti rule.” There are some things he does well and can serve as a specialist off the bench, but he has enough holes in his game that even if he is successful, he’d make it easier for defenses to gameplan in the playoffs.
