Offense

Will Riley is a young whose flashes of athleticism and shooting touch are intriguing, but whose offensive game is still largely a work in progress.

Riley is mostly a straight-line slasher with a strong first step and good acceleration. He can go from…

Physically Similar NCAA Prospects:

(Based on Height / Wingspan / Weight, not on Playing Style / Skill / Ceiling)

Corey BrewerDevin VassellFrancisco Garcia

Best Stats:

90h percentile Isolation, 52nd percentile P&R ball handler on 25% of his possessions

This maybe a bit of a backhanded complement, but for a somewhat raw prospect, the ISO numbers are encouraging and match the quick first step and pretty absurd acceleration he has on tape.  And the P&R numbers, while maybe not great, actually seem pretty livable considering the relative volume and the fact that he is so raw and likely going to be a late first or early second round pick.  Shows there is a bit of a base to build on, whether it happens or not.

Worst Stats:

48th percentile Catch and shoot, 45th percentile Shooting off the dribble, 53% TS% and 48% against Top 50 teams, 0.6% steal rate!!!!!, 1.7 DBPM, 1.0 DWS

Ok, so two buckets here.  First for a shooter and scorer, he can’t really shoot or score.  And his issues are just exacerbated against good teams.

Second, I pointed out it was a red flag that Maluach had such a low steal rate as a center.  Somehow, Will Riley has the exact same steal rate as an athletic wing and his block rate isn’t any better.  He is clearly athletic, but there is something either in how he is applying his athleticism or his processing that is a step off.  Similarly, for all of the tools, he isn’t having much defensive impact.  Feel like I am back watching and evaluating Josh Christopher again.  Looks like an NBA player, but the results just aren’t there on either side of the ball.

To be a star or to hit their ceiling:

Not to be too snarky here, but hit shots and play defense.  Some of the tools are there, but Riley needs to hit his threes at a higher clip and find a way to be more effective inside.  And then he needs to add some weight and be a bit more impactful on the inside.

Verdict:

You could do worse for a developmental prospect.  Riley has some nice tools.  The fact that he can get to the basket with a pretty great first step and acceleration is a nice weapon to have.  Ditto some of his defensive tools.  But it will probably take a couple of years for him to fix some of his issues and pack on some strength, so he’s not getting shoved around on both sides of the ball.

I think in his case, it will also be good for him to wind up in the right situation.  He needs to either wind up on a good team where he can come in and have a very simple job or on a bad team with a coach who will work with him and help set him up for success.  Offensively, Riley is better on quick and decisive actions where he can get downhill and use his burst to score or make the right pass.  Once he stars trying to create more and pounding the ball, you see a lot more missed shots, bogged down offense, and turnovers.

There is some upside here  But also a pretty decent chance it doesn’t really pan out.  I think the risk becomes worth the reward as you move into the 20s.  Again, probably a good gamble for a team with a lot of depth who can afford to let Riley develop and pack on strength for the next 1-3 years without needing an immediate return.

NBA Comp High:

Trevor Ariza
Trevor Ariza
The odd thing with Riley is he doesn't really have an identity. He could end up being a bit of a lethal scorer and shooter. Or he could be a lanky, switchable wing defender who can shoot, but is so-so inside the arc. If it's the former, perhaps more of a taller Kevin Martin would be his high end. But for now, I'm going with Ariza. The truth is it's probably neither, because I think there's about a 5-10% probability he can reach this. But if he hones in on his defense and puts his tools to use, while coming a good outside shooter and opportunistic driver, he could be the next Ariza.

NBA Comp Medium:

Taller Max Christie
Taller Max Christie
Christie in some ways might be the player with the most hype behind him, where the results aren't quite there yet. First he got hype for being a Laker and then as part of the Doncic trade and getting some minutes down the stretch for a banged up Mavs team. His career high BPM is -2.5, as he's become a credible defender, but still doesn't to much offensively. And that's a pretty realistic path for Riley. Now obviously, Christie hasn't reached his peak. But when you consider how the next three years might go for Riley, spending two years largely on the bench developing before starting to gain some momentum in 2028 feels like a reasonable middle outcome and one that I'd bet more more than the Ariza path. Though to be fair, it took Ariza (also a 2nd round pick) a few years as well.

NBA Comp Low:

Marquese Chriss
Marquese Chriss
Former #7 pick, Marquese Chriss was another toolsey player who looked the part, but just couldn't put it together. Like the rest of this list, he assumes a more defensive direction for Riley. But Chriss did actually become a solid defender, but was just such a non-factor offensively that he finished with a career BPM of -2.4. Realistically, there's probably a 45% chance for both this outcome and the Christie outcome. Leaving 10% for something closer to Ariza.
