Film View:

So first off, credit to OTE, the league has made significant strides in quality from last season.  I had to stop watching Jean Montero film and go back to FIBA, because the OTE was unwatchable.  Just a bunch of fast breaks with literally zero defense.  This year, while there are…

Best Stats:

Ok, so the first sets of numbers are basically video game stats.  Really impressive regardless of the level (kind of).  But the height and overall length are impressive for a PG.

Worst Stats:

25% on threes; 66% on FTs

Amen has to shoot.  And film aside, neither of these numbers inspires any confidence.

To be a star or to hit their ceiling:

Shooting.  Look there’s more.  He needs to show he can take defense seriously and that his offense is translatable and he didn’t look extra impressive playing in OTE.  But while there is technically a path to stardom as a PG without shooting (Ben Simmons was All NBA while shooting 0.1 threes per game), it’s extremely narrow.

Verdict:

I’ve toggled Amen as high as Tier 2 with Scoot and as low as Tier 4 as a lower probability home run swing.  Despite the complications of translating tape from OTE to the NBA, there’s a lot of good with Amen that gives him tremendous upside.  He’s clearly an elite functional athlete who checks a lot of boxes on both sides of the court.  Even if it takes him extra time to adapt to the NBA game compared to rookies coming from the NCAA or FIBA, the raw tools that Amen has to work with are legitimate.  Additionally, I do think the tape shows that Amen understands the game and is a very skilled ball handler and passer, so you are not just drafting an athlete and hoping you can teach him how to play basketball.  And as an added bonus, like LaMelo Ball when he was drafted, Amen has been in the limelight for years and has shown an ability to handle it.

But that shot is a major red flag and swing skill.  And it is not just in need of some tweaking the way that we might talk about Jarace Walker or Anthony Black.  It might need a full rebuild.  And what is Amen without a credible jumper in the NBA?  A skinnier Ben Simmons?  That’s not useless, but it’s not as useful either.  Simmons was a DPOY candidate who was hyper switchable and an elite driver who could absorb contact.  Amen would still have value, but you would really have to craft the perfect roster around him and how much less valuable than Simmons could he be before that simply isn’t worth it?

Ultimately, after going back and forth, I think that Amen is too skilled and too hard of a worker to not at least make his shot passable.  It might take 2-3 years, but he can provide other value in the meantime and if he goes early enough in the lottery, he is likely to land on a team that can be patient as he develops.  This definitely feels like a bit of a risk, but as a GM of a generic team, I think I’d rather take a risk on Amen in the top 5, then start turning to a group more likely to produce a solid to plus starter.

NBA Comp High:

Anfernee Hardaway
Anfernee Hardaway
Let's get out of the way that it is extremely hard to come up with comparisons for Amen. The ones I have seen elsewhere are mostly pretty bad references to guys like Ja Morant and this isn't a shot at anyone, it's just really hard to come up with a comparison for a hyperathletic player who may not be able to shoot and isn't really like Ben Simmons. That said, I think a high end could be someone like Penny. Hardaway was also an extremely athletic, tall PG who could process quickly and was a dangerous scorer and passer, but who was only a 32% career three point shooter (and that was raised at the end of his career). Sure, Amen could surpass that mark playing in the modern NBA. But there's a chance that a successful Amen is simply a passable shooter, who otherwise profiles much like Penny and is equally as impactful as Anfernee was pre-injuries (when he was a 4 time All Star who peaked with a 7.2 BPM).

NBA Comp Medium:

Taller (Rich Man's?) Kris Dunn
Taller (Rich Man's?) Kris Dunn
Again, let me start off acknowledging the imperfections about any comp for Amen. But when people try to think of a tall, athletic lead guard who carved out an NBA career without shooting, they keep coming back to Ben Simmons. I understand why, but perhaps a better comparison is Kris Dunn. Dunn is a stout defender who could guard up the lineup. He's a strong ball handler and great passer. He's an extremely gifted athlete, but his game is held back by his lack of a jumper. I also think that because of his recent injuries, Dunn maybe underrated in the eyes of some fans. In Chicago, he was becoming their shut down defender and had a 3.1 DBPM. In Utah, he was seemingly getting healthy when Collin Sexton went down and had a 2.4 BPM (1.7 DBPM, 0.7 OBPM). So I think that a healthy Dunn has shown a chartable path. And I think that Amen has the same good qualities Dunn has, along with a bit more height and athletic gifts (Dunn is no slouch). I would bet that Amen has a better career than Dunn, so perhaps this needs the Rich Man's qualifier. But I could see them having a more similar style than Amen and Simmons, whose size and strength are so core to his playing style.

NBA Comp Low:

Shaun Livingston
Shaun Livingston
No, this isn't completely fair to Livingston who suffered a horrific knee injury early in his career, so we never really go to see the player he could become. However, there a realistic low end outcome for Amen could be one where his shot never materializes and his overall impact is limited and more from his defense and decision making. He could still carve out a career similar to Livingston, who was an important role player for three Warriors' championships (and two other Final appearances).
