Drew Timme

Verdict:

Timme is squarely in a two-way tie with Oscar Tshiebwe for what I am just going to dub the annual Trevion Williams award for the high character, revered college upperclassmen with an interesting mix of skills, but whose game really doesn’t translate to the NBA without a full skillset reinvention or sudden unlocking of requisite physical abilities.  Timme has been a credit to college basketball the last four years and I have never heard or read a negative story about him.  If you squint hard enough, you can imagine him living in the gym and expanding his three point shot while dropping enough weight to pick up just enough lateral quickness to survive.  And like with Trevion Williams last year, nothing would make me happier than to see that happen.

However, it’s just not very likely.  Timme certainly may work hard and improve some skills.  But he’s a bruising post player with good inside touch and a monster on the offensive rebounds, who even as a college senior was 3rd percentile on the catch and shoot.  And it’s not all threes, he shot 5 of 15 on shots inside the three point line.  Compound that with his lack of lateral speed and slow change of direction and I don’t see him being able to guard the perimeter in the NBA well enough to survive, even if he did improve his jumper.

More than likely, we see Timme play a bit in the G-League and or overseas.  Maybe get a couple of games in the league in garbage time.  And then see him work on becoming the next great coach or front office executive.
